Kuwait City – February 14, 2016: Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Boston University’s (BU) Zaman Lab to launch the International Center for Applied Mathematics and Computational Bioengineering (ICAMCB). The Center aims to increase research quality and solidify GUST as a world class research producer.

The ICAMCB will be run by faculty from the GUST Department of Mathematics & Natural Sciences and the Department of Computer Science, and will conduct and collaborate on different research projects in Kuwait in close collaboration with Zaman Lab at Boston University. The Lab specializes in the interface of cell biology, mechanics, systems biology & medicine, and developing robust technologies and innovative solutions to improve the quality and practice of medicine in the developing world.

GUST President, Professor Donald Bates, said, “In recent years, GUST has increased its focus and commitment to research, and with the recent launch of the ICAMCB, in collaboration with Zaman Lab, it will cement its status in the country and the region as an internationally recognized research hub.”

One of the ICAMCB missions is to look at prevalent medical problems in Kuwait, such as cancer and heart disease, and search for possible effective solutions. The focus of the center will remain on local problems, how to address them, and attempt to look for solutions. This goes in line with GUST’s mission to be a center of excellence in research and productive member of society.

Boston University Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Founder of Zaman Lab, Professor Muhammad Hamid Zaman, said “It is an honor to work with such dedicated individuals at GUST. At the end, we all have the same goal: to improve the world around us. Which is why we are working with various schools and institutions around the globe, including GUST, to develop solutions for many widespread issues.”

The Center will be hosting its inaugural lecture, led by Professor Zaman today, at 12:30pm on its campus.
