Awardees of GUST Postgraduate Scholarship Announced

• Two GUST graduates were awarded scholarships to pursue both Master’s and Doctorate degrees in the United States

• GUST is the only private university that offers Post-Graduate Scholarships to its students

 

XX September, 2016, Kuwait City: Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) announced today the names of the two students who have been awarded the GUST Postgraduate Scholarship by the university to pursue their masters and doctoral degrees in the United States. This scholarship is the only one of its kind offered by a private university in Kuwait.

The first scholarship recipient is Maryam Almuhanna, who graduated from GUST with a degree in English – Linguistics/Translation. She has been accepted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Linguistics. Within that department, she will pursue her master’s degree specialized in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) in the Fall of 2016.

The second recipient is Hala Al-Mutawa, a GUST graduate with a degree in English Education. She has been accepted at the University of Pennsylvania, GSE and will pursue her M.S.Ed specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in the Fall of 2016.  

Professor Donald Bates, GUST President, said: “Our University believes in bring out the best in everyone, and we always have an eye out for those who display exceptional talent and intellect. The aim of the scholarship is to extend an opportunity to our best students to continue their education at a higher level, and return to GUST to teach and help create a positive impact. I am extremely proud of Maryam Almuhanna and Hala Al Mutawa, and I wish them the very best of luck.”

 

Also commenting on the occasion, Dr. Salah Al-Sharhan, GUST’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, “The success of our students reflects the success of our university as an effective educational institution, capable of producing world class academics. I am proud of their achievements, and can’t wait to have them back as colleagues here.”

 

In order to qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be Kuwaiti citizens, with undergraduate degrees from GUST, and a minimum GPA of 3.30. They need to have a high standard of English and be able to meet all academic, entrance and other requirements of the universities concerned. Applicants must not be older than 25 years of age, and must complete their studies within a specified timeframe on a full time basis. Additionally, recipients are required to return to teach at GUST for a pre-specified time period.

In addition to the scholarship, GUST will also offer its students a stipend equivalent to a teaching assistant’s salary, as well as other various benefits. These benefits include academic tuition and mandatory fees, basic medical insurance for the duration of the study period, annual support for educational supplies and materials and an annual round trip ticket.

Since 2012, three students have been sent abroad as part of this scholarship, Badriyah Al Hussaini, was sent to study Accounting at the University of Southern California where she is currently enrolled in their PhD program. Last year, two candidates were awarded the graduate scholarship to pursue their Masters’ degree, Buthainah Al-Refaae joined Boston University to study Journalism and Mohammed Almuraikhi to study Finance at George Washington University.
