GUST Men’s Soccer Team Wins 3rd Place at Belgrade International University Sports Tournament in Serbia
• Men’s football team wins 3rd place in the tournament.
• Captain Mubarak Al Hajiri awarded GUST MVP.
• Striker Ali Al Bassam was the top scorer in the tournament
Kuwait City, XX June 2016: Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) men’s and women’s soccer teams attended the 9th annual Belgrade International University Sports Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia. The tournament brought together different Universities from across Europe, Russia, and the Middle East to compete whilst experiencing different cultures and forge international friendships.
The tournament itself was attended by over 1000 students from DIF, PEP & FON Universities of Serbia, GUST of Kuwait, Qatar University, AUB, LAU and USEK of Lebanon, Sabanci University of Turkey, CTU of the Czech Republic, ZESM of Croatia.
One of the standout teams of Men’s Football competition during the tournament was the GUST men’s team that won 3rd place. Representatives of the Kuwaiti Embassy also attended matches to see the men’s soccer team in action.
Tournament Organizer, Sonja Millicevic, said, “In a great football competition held over 3 days, the GUST men’s football team was an absolute surprise. They played their football like wizards and fought like Spartans with only luck standing between them and the gold medal. “
The teams spent 7 days in Belgrade. Upon their arrival, they started training for the tournament, registered, and had a comprehensive tour of Belgrade. On May 19th-20th the GUST men and women’s teams played against their adversaries. Finally, on the last day was the semi-final, where GUST’s men’s team won 3rd place.
Craig Drennan, Athletics Director at GUST, said, “Our result was a credit to the team’s dedication, persistence and guidance of coach Mohammed Al Senusi and captain Mubarak Al Hajiri. GUST striker Ali Al Bassam showed his class and was also the top scorer in the tournament with 5 goals in 4 matches, while Captain Mubarak Al Hajiri was awarded GUST MVP for his consistent, outstanding performances.”
The women’s soccer team also garnered praise and were regarded as having the best sporting behaviour of the tournament.
BEST tournaments, occur every year in Belgrade, and has been occurring for 9 years now. GUST has been invited to participate in next year’s tournament, which coincides with the organisation’s ten year anniversary.
