Gulf University for Science and Technology Student Clubs Win National Competitions

Kuwait City – April 2015: Gulf University for Science and Technology’s Debate and Microsoft teams both won top spots in country-wide competitions. Gulf University for Science and Technology’s team won the Microsoft Image Competition and the GUST Arabic and English Debate teams both received second place at the Kuwait University Debate League last week.

The Microsoft Imagine Cup is the world’s premier student technology competition and is designed to solve everyday problems, develop new technological skills, and turn ideas into businesses. The final project must conform to one of three categories: Games, Innovation and Citizenship For the competition, student teams start by creating a new idea and continue to building the final project.

Meshari Al Abdulhadi, Karim Al Maghrabi and Fahad Al Qallaf made up the Microsoft team, and were coached by Dr. Israa Omran.

Continuing GUST’s winning streak, the Arabic and English Debate teams both received second place at the Kuwait University Debate League. GUST debaters proved their deftness in the debate arena in Kuwait and went against some of the strongest teams in the country. The Arabic Debate Team will go on to represent the university in Doha, Qatar at the International Debate Championship.

Hamad Al Khudari, Yousif Al Ali, Mishal Al Wazzan and Saud Al Fayyad, formed the Arabic team and Rakan Al Mutairi, Mubarak Al Enizi and Ali Akash formed the English Team. Both groups benefitted from the mentorship of Dr. Hussain Al Sharoofi.

Dr. Donald Bates, GUST President, said “It makes me proud that GUST has students with such active minds that are being put to good use. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team members and their coaches for their outstanding representation of GUST, and I wish them all even more success in the future.”

The Arabic Debate Team will go on to represent GUST in Doha-Qatar at the International Debate Championship.
