Kuwait City, 3/3/2015: Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) last week held an award ceremony following the success of last month’s record breaking charity drive, organized by the University’s Public Relations Club. Over the course of 24 hours, and with the help and coordination of the other university clubs and student volunteers, the PR Club was able to gather over 56 tons worth of clothes for refugees in the Levantine countries affected by the ongoing civil war in Syria. In doing so, they broke the world record for the world’s biggest ever collection of charitable aid, and nearly doubled the previous record which stood at 29 tons.

Dr. Donald Bates, GUST President, said, “As the president of this University, I am proud to once again announce another great achievement. Shortly after we received two new global accreditations we officially partnered with one of the top universities in the USA to allow students to pursue 16 new degrees in a number of fields. Tonight, we as a university celebrate something far greater. On the 30th of January, the PR Club at GUST broke the world record for the largest ever charity collection. I would like to sincerely thank the PR Club President, Mr. Faisal Al-Saei and his team for this amazing effort in putting together such a massive humanitarian and altruistic campaign. I would also like to thank everyone who donated for your selflessness and generosity. With this, not only have you raised GUST’s profile, but the profile of an entire nation and shown GUSTS’s true spirit.”

During the ceremony, Dr. Bates honored all those involved in the charity clothing drive from GUST student clubs, to sponsors, to social media personalities, and independent volunteers. This comes shortly after they were honored by the Minister of al-Diwan al-Amiri Affairs, HH Sh. Nasser Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

GUST’s head of Office of Student Life, Ms. Anwar Al Abah, said, “It is always a pleasure to show appreciation to our students for what they can achieve. With this new triumph GUST is now placed well ahead of its peers and will be viewed as the model to follow for some time to come.”

PR Club President, Mr. Faisal Al-Saei, said, “This achievement is a great mark of pride for all of us here at GUST, and we thank Dr. Bates for honoring us. I am also proud and moved by everyone’s involvement, support, and generosity for the wonderful work they have done for Syrian Refugees.”

Not forgetting their duties to the local community and continuing the charitable momentum amassed following the mammoth charity drive, the PR Club maintained its efforts a few weeks later. They, along with a group of volunteers, drove around different parts of Kuwait distributing aid to the disadvantaged.

About GUST

Gulf University for Science and Technology began operation in 2002, in a strategic partnership with the University of Missouri – St. Louis, as the first private university in Kuwait. It is based on an American-style model of higher education and aims to serve the increasing educational demands of Kuwait and the Gulf region. The university houses two colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Business Administration, and hosts approximately 3,000 full-time students. GUST is Kuwait’s premier private university and aims to be the ‘University of Choice’ for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. GUST encourages academic and research excellence, and aspires to become a leader in the pursuit of knowledge in Kuwait and abroad.

Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) received its Institutional Accreditation from the Private Universities Council (PUC) Ministry of Higher Education in the State of Kuwait in 2002 and has been re-accredited every four years.

In 2013, GUST attained international recognition for its English Foundation Program by the Commission on Intensive English Program Accreditation (CEA) based in the U.S.A. The CEA’s purpose is to provide a means for improving the quality of English language teaching and administration through accepted standards.

In 2014, the University powered through to achieve two more prestigious accreditations. The first is by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the worldwide leader in assuring quality and stimulating innovation in applied science, computing, and engineering since 1932. GUST joined the elite institutions of the world in August 2014 as the only university in Kuwait to attain the accreditation for its computer science degree, and one of only 25 accredited programs outside the United States.

The second accreditation achieved in 2014 was from AACSB-International, where GUST’s College of Business Administration joined less than five percent of the world’s business programs to achieve this accreditation. GUST is the only premier private university in Kuwait to receive this esteemed recognition by AACSB, an institution that has been devoted to the advancement of management education for over 95 years. AACSB represents the highest achievement for all business schools.
