Chapter one..<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finland is one of the world\u2019s northernmost
\ncountries of Europe, Finland is located between
\nRussia on the east Sweden on the west, and the top
\nof Norway on the north, On the southwest the land
\njust into the Baltic Sea, which splits into the gulf of
\nBothnian on the country\u2019s western side and the Gulf
\nof Finland along its southern edge. About one third of
\nthe length of the country lies north of the arctic circle.
\nThe climate, soil and landforms make human
\nsettlement difficult in the northern two thirds of the
\ncountry. Most of the Finnish people live in the
\nsouthern third of the country either along the coast
\non the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland or around
\nthe edges of the numerous lakes that dot the glacially
\nformed land scape. The capital of Finland is Helsinki.
\nArea of 130,680 square miles (388,462 square Kilometers) population<\/p>\n

Chapter two..<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finland is a stable progressive country despite
\nnatural as well as political and economic handicaps.
\nIt has been independent only since 1917. The young
\nrepublic was defeated twice by the Soviet Union
\nduring World War 2. The Finnish were forced to give
\nup valuable land areas, resettle over 400,00 people,
\nand pay large reparations to the Soviet Union. Since
\nthat time, the Finns have rebuilt their country and
\nhave maintained a natural foreign policy the land
\nsurface of Finland is underlain by ancient granitic
\nrocks that were severely eroded during the ice age.
\nMost of the country lies at low elevations with
\nmountainous terrain restricted to the far north<\/p>\n

Chapter 3..<\/strong><\/p>\n

Poorly drained land dominates much of the surface
\nwhich is dotted with an estimated 55,000 lakes.
\ninland water covers 12,979 square miles (33,615
\nsquare kilometers) of Finland’s area. The hilly areas
\nridge, lakes and quashes were formed by glaciers.
\nThe most fertile soils lie along the coast and around
\nin land lakes, but they are sparse. Finland has a high
\nlatitude, continental type climate, in the southern part
\nmoderating winds off the north and the Baltic Sea
\nprevents severe weather conditions. The northern
\nportions of the country have long severe winter short.
\nCool summers that might not make sense.<\/p>\n

Chapter 4<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Frost can occur during any month in the north and
\neven in the south the growing season averages only 3
\nmonths or less. Far northern latitude however it has
\nlong hours of summer daylight, which offsets the
\nshort growing season. The annual average
\nprecipitation ranges from 24 inches (bi centimeters)
\nin the south to 16 inches (41 centimeters) in the far north. Winter snowfall is also considerable.<\/p>\n

Plants & Animals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Forests cover much of Finland, and lumbering is a
\nmajor industry. Even the Finland is the 6th coldest
\ncountry in Europe, pines and spruce are the main
\nconiferous species and, in the south, they are also
\nmixed deciduous trees such as birch, hazed, aspen,
\nmaple, alder & last one is linden, trees of the northern
\nforests are often dwarfed in size because of the poor
\ngrowing conditions. The northern tundra, or bogland,
\nZones have lichens mess and lastly cloud berries in
\naddition to the stunted trees<\/p>\n

Animals<\/strong><\/p>\n

The animal life of Finland is adopted to a land of
\nlarge forest and water areas and a rugged climate.
\nWaterfalls abound on coastal and inland waters.
\nAnimals such as bears, wolves, and lynx inhabit the
\nforests. Abundant reindeer serve as domesticated
\nanimals in the northern Lapland area. Among fish
\nspecies are trout, and white fish in northern inland
\nwater and perch and pike in the southern lakes and streams.<\/p>\n

People and Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Finnish language belongs to the Finno-Ugric
\nlanguage group, which also includes Hungarian and
\nEstonian.
\nNotable minority groups include the Sami in the north
\nand swedes along the Baltic Sea coast and in the
\nAhvenanmaa. The Sami may be descendants of the
\noriginal Fino or Mongolian tribes who came to the
\nregion. There are several thousand Sami. And the
\nSwedish group totals about 6% of the population but
\nis steadily decreasing in numbers although Finland
\ndoes not have an official language, Finnish and
\nSwedish are both considered national languages.
\nThere is no official or state religion and though the
\nevangelical Lutheran and Finnish orthodox churches
\nhave special recognition, freedom of the religion is
\ngranted to all religious groups. The majority of the
\npeople are Lutherans, though there are small
\nminorities of Greek orthodox and persons not
\naffiliated with a particular religion or other beliefs.
\nBecause Finnish culture has been rather isolated, it
\nhas developed distinct characteristics. The Kalevala
\nis a national folk epic published in 1835.

Agriculture is decreasing in importance in the Finnish
\neconomy agriculture, fishing & forestry accounted for36%
\nof the labor force in 1960 but less than 5 % by
\nthe end of the 20th century nevertheless as a matter
\nof government policy, Finland remains self-sufficient
\nin food staples, however the country depends heavily
\nupon foreign trade to obtain items such as machinery
\noil coal food chemical vehicles and many others
\nrequired for its economy. Germany, Sweden, the UK,
\nRussia, The U.S & Japan are its leading trading
\nPartners<\/p>\n
