GUST representatives win two best diplomat awards out of five at BUMUN
GUST managed to win two out of the five awards within an assembly of 88 participants

December 6, 2016: Gulf University for science and technology (GUST) participated in Bahrain University Model United Nations (BUMUN) held in Bahrain on the 26th and the 27th of November. The trip was sponsored by the Office of Student Life (OSL). GUST managed to win two out of the five awards within an assembly of 88 participants from 30 different universities. Thousands of middle school, high school, and college students, across the country and around the world annually participate in Model United Nations, which involves substantial researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically role-play delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. At the end of most conferences, outstanding delegates in each committee are recognized and given an award.
The distinguished students, Mubarak Alenzi and Rakan Al Mutairi, were able to outperform other delegates and win two awards. Mubarak Al Anezi, MUN delegate of Luxembourg said, “MUN is a very valuable experience, it has developed my personality immensely, the way I view politics and of course the importance of the United Nations in maintaining an organized system in discussing important matters.”
The Office of Student Life, represented by its head, Ms. Anwar Al Sabah played a key role in this participation as they have organized and contacted the trip in accordance with the Ministry of Youth Affairs in Bahrain. They have also conducted interviews to choose the participants who will represent GUST in this event.
The gust delegation consisted of fours students, Mubarak Al Anezi, Rakan Al Mutairi, Fahad Al Ayoub, Sara Sallam, and Supervised by Dr. Ali Dashti. The delegates were appointed to countries at random which left them with Luxembourg, Mexico, Egypt and South Africa. MUN discusses two topics every year, and this year’s topics were Cyber Warfare and developing Weapons Technology. Participants get a month in advance to prepare for the topics.
This MUN conference was the 12th organized by Bahrain, and was also GUST’s first participation in the event. GUST continuously encourages its students in partaking in such opportunities to represent the university. This comes from its belief that activities which implement knowledge gained beyond the classroom provide students with unique experiences that aid them in excelling in their career path.
