During the event, a video was screened highlighting GUST’s journey from its humble beginnings in Hawally in 2002, to the prestigious institution housed today in an expansive and technologically advanced campus in West Mishref.  Today,GUST boasts a number of affiliations with prominent US universities such as the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (UMASS-Lowell) with a number of internationally accredited courses. VIP guests attended the event to pay tribute to outgoing BOT members, and to get to know the new BOT members.

Dr. Abdulrahman Al Muhailan, GUST’s former Chairman, said, “It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to the university that has become my second home, and to the staff, faculty, and students that have become my second family over the last thirteen years.  However, I am also optimistic, knowing that the university is in the good hands of Dr. Salem Al Tuhaih, and that it will continue to move forward in realizing our original vision of founding a quality university to equip the upcoming generation for the challenges of tomorrow.”

Dr. Al Tuhaih, GUST’s new Chairman, said, “My fellow members of the Board of Trustees as well as myself will do our best in continuing the growth and expansion of the Gulf University for Science and Technology, and make sure the university accommodates the growing number of students. Furthermore, we seek to expand within the next three years to embrace the 21 undergraduate and master’s degrees, which will be offered to our students in collaboration with Umass-Lowell”.

Joining Dr. Al-Tuhaih on the new BOT is Dr. Fahad Al-Zumai, Dr. Nader Al Jallal, Dr. Anwar Al Fuzai.  Other new members includeGUST President, Dr. Donald Bates, Associate Provost of Academic Affairs and Director of the Center for International Studies, Professor Joel Glassman representing UMSL, and Dr. JasemAbdulsalam who was on the previous BOT.

Dr. Donald Bates, GUST President, said, “Our university has grown at an unprecedented pace, and I must thank Dr. Al Muhailanand all the members of the Board of Trustees for their dedication, hard work, and stewardship in leading the university to where it is today.  I am confident that the new board, with their years of experience will prove to be a valuable asset to our institution, and will continue to propel GUST to greatness.”

In 2014, the University received two new prestigious accreditations. The first by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the worldwide leader in assuring quality and stimulating innovation in applied science, computing, and engineering since 1932.  With this, GUST is now the only university in Kuwait to attain an accreditation for its computer science degree, and one of only 25 accredited programs outside the United States.

The second was from AACSB-International, where GUST’s College of Business Administration joined less than 5% of the world’s business programs to achieve this accreditation. GUST is the only private university in the country to receive this esteemed recognition by AACSB, an institution that has been devoted to the advancement of management education for over 95 years. AACSB represents the highest achievement for all business schools.

Earlier this month, GUST signed an agreement with UMass-Lowell to offer new dual-degree masters programs and a new undergraduate engineering program.  The new courses, in Accounting, Finance, Innovation & Technological Entrepreneurship, Computer Science, Education, and Engineering are expected to commence in September 2015 (pending final approval from the Private Universities Council on the exact starting date).  The new programs are accredited under the same standards as those offered on the UMass-Lowell campus in the USA, and 16 UMass-Lowell faculty and administrators are expected to move to Kuwait by September. With this development, GUST will be the only university in Kuwait whose students graduate with an accredited American degree.
