Malala Donates Prize Money To Help Rebuild 65 Damaged Schools In Gaza .

The recent Nobel Peace Prize winner — who gained international prominence for surviving gunshot wounds to the face at the hands of the Taliban in 2012 — announced on Wednesdaythat she is donating the$50,000 she was given for the World Children’s Prize toward the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, the Associated Press reported. The organization isrebuilding schools that were damagedin the Israel-Hamas conflict this summer, according to the Daily Beast.

“Innocent Palestinian children havesuffered terribly and for too long,” Yousafzai said at the event in Stockholm on Wednesday, according to NBC News noted. “We must all work to ensure Palestinian boys and girls, and all children everywhere, receive a quality education in a safe environment. Because without education, there will never be peace.”

The United Nations reported that 490 Palestinian children were killed in the 50-day conflict in Gaza, according to The Independent, and violence left roughly 20,000 homes in the area uninhabitable. As the Daily Beast reported, Malala’s prize money will be used to help restore 65 schools that were damaged in the conflict.

The Pakistani activist has been advocating for human rights for years. More recently, Malala made headlines for calling the world to actin saving the kidnapped Nigerian school girls from Boko Haram, and helping Syrian refugees cross the border into neighboring Jordan to find safety amid civil violence
